TRAUMA is an experience or event that overwhelms an individual's ability/capacity to cope with or make sense of what has occurred; essentially there are NO words and your body reacts appropriately in defensive mode!!!! This is NORMAL and CAN happen to ANYONE (healthy or not).
TRAUMA is individual to the person.
TRAUMA is on a bell curve continuum (expected pain and suffering to COMPLEX TRAUMA AND PTSD.
TRAUMA dysregulates our brain and body 🧠🤯🤬(brain doesn't work properly, body reacts in defense and survival, and reactions seem over the top).
TRAUMA prevents our brains from working properly, when prolonged AND changes the brain/body from connection to protection.

Fundamentally, every part of the body and brain are affected by trauma. And no, you are not going crazy! Our minds can play tricks on us and hijack our five senses, including the sixth sense (body). These mis-interpretations/perception can trigger individuals at rest causing uncontrolled feelings of fear, danger, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, loss of cognitive and executive functioning; unconsciously the body and brain respond to these perceptions which shift our physiological (physical) states to support defense.
SINCE THE PANDEMIC~ We see this autonomic deregulation more today in kids, children, adolescents and adults. It is ANYONE and EVERYONE!
In survivors' of trauma, normal risk and threat can be interpreted (misinterpreted) as danger/death, thereby causing the individuals autonomic nervous system to react, overreact or shut down. Our philosophy is safety, connection, calming the autonomic system so that healing may take place.

A BRAIN IMPACTED BY TRAUMA FUNCTIONS DIFFERENTLY THAN A BRAIN WITHOUT 👇
🌸ARE YOU SEEING DANGER where others see manageable situations/expected life experiences? After a trauma, your threat perception turns off~The fear-driven primitive part of the brain TURNS ON. The Amygdala becomes hyperactive~ and we return to our DEFENSIVE, primitive state.
The sensory filtering system that distinguishes between present danger and past danger does not work properly. This makes it very difficult to BE PRESENT AND CONNECTED (past and present danger converge and looks the same).
🌸SENSORY INPUT~ The brain gets input through senses, skin, body and is interpreted by the Thalamus, deep in the mid brain. It is classically known for its sensory relay role, as well as emotion, memory, arousal and other sensory-motor functions. When faced with a perceived or real threat, without escape (HYPERAROUSAL), the THALAMUS BREAKS DOWN, as your brain protects your body and you dissociate. Your sense of self and perception of the world gets blunted, dampened. This decreased sense of self, prevents connection, and prevents one from FEELING ALIVE.
🌸THE TRAUMA REMAINS UNCONSCIOUS, COMPRISED OF UNINTEGRATED IMAGES, SENSATIONS, THOUGHTS, SMELLS, SOUNDS OF THE TRAUMA THAT EXIST SEPARATELY FROM THE PERSON. Thalamus breaks down, unintegrated
When in a trauma response there are no words!
🌸🌸Paradoxically, a trauma survivor may only FEEL ALIVE when in heightened situations ~ pleasure and pain get crossed. Individuals use alcohol, drugs, and engage in risky behavior to numb or feel alive.

(neurofeeback, EMDR to rewire neural pathways)
